Location: Petersfield and/or Grayshott primarily, however there is an option to work at other locations around Hampshire GU32 3DT
Salary per week: £150 rising to £180 upon successful probationary period
Working hours: 5 days per week including Saturdays. One weekday off in lieu. 9am-5.30pm (37.5 hours per week)

A fantastic opportunity to become part of a team, developing a career in an interesting job. Matheson Optometrists are looking for someone to provide excellent customer care to their patients. As well as providing administration duties, you will learn how to perform minor frame repairs, assist patients choose frames and basic clinical testing.

Matheson Optometrists is an independent group of Optician practices formed in 1984. The first of their practices was opened in Denmead. They now also have practices in Petersfield, Grayshott, Alresford, Four Marks, and Purbrook. They provide comprehensive, high quality eyecare services and eyewear products at reasonable and affordable prices.  

Duties will include:

The day to day administration and customer service duties to include:

  • Appointment making which involves speaking directly to customers and keeping the appointments diary up to date
  • Filing / photocopying as and when required
  • Typing letters and other materials as required
  • Taking incoming telephone calls from customers
  • Dealing with customer queries


Further optical assistant duties after a period of training will include:

  • Minor Frame repairs
  • Assisting customers to choose their frames
  • Basic clinical testing


Other information

They have 7 In-house training modules in the fields of Clinical Assistant, Dispensing Assistant and Technical Assistant. This training is on a one-to-one basis, and when an adequate level of competence has been reached, an assessment exam is taken. If successful, the assistant is awarded a certificate and an incremental pay increase to reflect their advancing competence levels Please note that smoking is not permitted during work hours due to the close proximity of patients.

  • Driver is preferable


Qualifications required

  • A* - C grade in Maths and English at GCSE level or equivalent


  • 20 days annual leave plus 8 statutory days leave
  • Opportunity to upskill via in house training programmes


Future Prospects

  • Progression routes and career plan in place for successful applicants which will include further training in many different aspects of eyecare
  • Progression to Advanced Apprenticeship in Customer Service for the right applicant
