PETA Ltd are looking to source an exceptional CNC Machinist Apprentice for our client, Callatech in Worthing.

As a Machinist Apprentice, you will be involved in highly skilled, complex, precision work, machining components from specialist materials using CNC machine tools such as centre lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, horizontal and cylindrical grinding machines, electro discharge machines, single and multi- axis CNC machine tools centres.

You will learn how to set up, operate and adjust/edit equipment settings as applicable to the machine tool being used. Once competent you will be able to produce, prove and/or edit programmes. Upon completion you will be measuring and checking components, making adjustments to the equipment/programme to ensure components meet the required specification.

Duties

As a Machinist Apprentice, your job will entail being able to receive and check materials to ensure that all raw materials are available and correct . You will be using engineering drawings and technical specifications to set and operate the machinery.

This a process driven environment using the proven techniques, including applying work holding arrangements utilising specialist tooling. You will learn how to programme, set and operate modern CNC equipment as well as set and operate manual mills and lathes.

You will plan how to complete milling operations, programming data into CNC Mills and Lathes using chucks, fixtures and vices. As you gain experience you will take responsibility for adjusting a range of machining parameters to maximise machining outcomes producing products with a high degree of accuracy and finish, ensuring quality standards are achieved.  You will use conventional mechanical measuring equipment including Vernier’s, Micrometre’s to check that work is correct.

Callatech was Established in 1990 and in 2000 the company is owned and managed by Philip Frost and Jane Frost. The company has very quickly developed a reputation for high precision machining, technical ability and a desire to deliver nothing short of a 1st class service to all its customers. In 2006 Callatech relocated to a purpose built unit to ensure the company could increase the range of machining to keep all operations involved in production in house, thus keeping strict control of both quality and scheduling. Along with increasing the machining capacity of components we can Turn, Mill, Grind, Stress Relieve, Shot Blasting, Gear Cutting, Balancing, NDT & Dye Penetrate, Spark Eroding and Wire Cutting all backed up with the latest computer software. We have a strong desire to maintain our current talent pipeline and see apprenticeship as the best route to provide us with  highly skilled engineers we need.

Personal qualities
  • You will have a good level of dexterity hand skills
  • Demonstrate an interest in contributing towards manufacturing mechanical components are desirable
  • You will have good hand to eye co-ordination and hand skills
  • Your logical approach to problem solving will enable you to perform to make a good contribution to all aspects of the job

You need to be able to learn through instruction and experience. 

Qualifications required
  • 5 GCSE's at grade C or above (or equivalents) to include Maths and English are essential.

Future prospects

There is opportunity for a full time role once the apprenticeship has been completed. 

Training to be provided

This position is offered as an apprenticeship and you will be completing a Level 3 Engineering qualification. You will be employed directly by the client but be support every step of the way by PETA.

Throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship you will be required to attend PETA’s Havant training centre for off-the-job training.  The majority of skills development training in years 2, 3 and 4 will be completed with your employer at your place of work.

You will be employed whilst you are completing your apprenticeship this will include 18 months of day release training at PETA Ltd where you will complete your Level 2 (Foundation Competence) qualification. This will include:

  • Preparing and using Manual Turning Machines
  • Preparing and using Manual Milling Machines
  • Preparing and using CNC Milling Machines
  • Preparing and using CNC Turning Machines
  • Using fitting and assembly Techniques.
  • Producing Mechanical Engineering Drawings using a CAD System
  • Conducting business improvement activities
  • You will also complete the Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Technical Knowledge).


You will then pass through the foundation Gateway and progress onto your Level 3 development programme and complete:

Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) delivered in the workplace by your PETA Learning & Development Coach. During this time you will be day released for 24 months to complete a Technical certificate (Level 3) as part of your advanced apprenticeship standard. This will be the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge).
