Congratulations to Connor McGiffin
Congratulations to Connor McGiffin of Carrera - Highly commended ICT Apprentice of the Year
Connor is currently undertaking an Intermediate ICT Practitioner Apprenticeship at Carrera UK.
Working as part of the team at Carrera, Connor’s work varies from sourcing, configuring, implementing and maintaining Point of Sale systems to maintaining servers, PCs, laptops and phone systems and providing first line support to customers. Throughout all his work his primary aim is to have first contact resolution meaning the customers issue is resolved in a shorter period of time and there is no requirement to pass the issue on to another technician.
Connor chose the Apprenticeship route because he found that being in a classroom all day did not help him learn as well as by being hands-on. Connor says his learning style is much more suited to learning on the job.
When he started his Apprenticeship, Connor only knew the very basics about computers but soon learnt that with a good team around you and a willingness to ask questions he could learn quickly and rapidly develop his knowledge.
During his Apprenticeship Connor has developed a range of skills and knowledge that allows him to build and configure PCs for supply to customers as well as providing telephone support to diagnose and rectify faults and issues. He has also developed his SQL coding skills.
Connor has become skilled in Point of Sale systems and is competent in providing a full service to customers from sourcing to maintaining their POS system.
Gary Mullineaux from Carrera said: "Connor started the Apprenticeship with relatively little knowledge, having never undertaken any IT qualification before. On Connor’s first day he was thrown right in at the deep end, being tasked with sourcing, configuring, implementing and then maintaining a fully functional Point of Sale system for one of our clients. From start to finish Connor showed a high level of professionalism when dealing with the different companies involved to get the system setup, and was then able to gain new skills such as SQL coding and Communication skills which have continued to benefit him in his job role. Slowly but surely, Connor is beginning to show a good level of knowledge across the IT support spectrum within the short time he has been employed.
"As well as his technical skills Connor has developed his self-confidence, particularly when it comes to the phone. Connor had confidence issues when he joined, and felt really uncomfortable communicating with customers over the phone, worrying he would get things wrong. After support and training, Connor slowly started to come out of his shell, and gain the much needed confidence to deal appropriately with customer problems and questions. Connor has listened to feedback from customers and members of his team and used this wisely to develop his confidence. This in turn has helped him develop his customer service skills and he is now providing a professional service by understanding his customer’s needs and providing a resolution to their issues.
"Connor has managed to grow into a well-respected, knowledgeable member of the team who can now comfortably take on any project and tackle it with the same enthusiasm and energy he has shown in his first year of his apprenticeship. "
With his new confidence, willingness to ask questions and expertise in Point of Sale systems Connor sees himself developing his career in the IT industry and progressing to the Advanced Apprenticeship.
Good Luck Connor!
