Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the way organisations operate, driving productivity, innovation, and new opportunities for growth. As part of the government’s new “group” of priority skills units, the AI delivery and organisational transformation short course has been developed to help Operational Managers implement and harness the power of AI within their organisations.
The programme provides operational managers with a practical understanding of how AI can be used to increase efficiencies but with a focus on the implementation and the associated risks for both the organisation and the people. Managers will build the confidence to support AI-related change within their teams and help ensure that AI solutions remain aligned to organisational objectives and values.
Through a structured and accessible approach, the course equips managers with the knowledge and skills required to contribute to responsible AI implementation, supporting long-term organisational growth.
Day 1 – Understanding AI in the Workplace (K1, K2, S1, S11)
Learn how AI works and what it means for your organisation.
- What AI is and the key ideas you need to know
- How AI can support better decision-making
- The benefits of AI and the risks to be aware of
- How AI can impact jobs, teams, and ways of working
Day 2 – Using AI Responsibly as a Leader (K2, K3, K14, S2, S7)
Understand how to use AI in an ethical and responsible way.
- What “responsible AI” means in practice
- The role leaders play in introducing AI successfully
- How AI can affect different groups of people
- Building a strong and ethical case for using AI
Day 3 – Planning and Delivering AI in Your Organisation (K4, K13, S2, S9, S10)
Learn how to implement AI projects effectively.
- How to create a clear AI strategy
- How to manage change when introducing AI
- How to run AI projects using simple project management approaches
- How to check if AI is working well and delivering results
Day 4 – Choosing the Right AI Solutions (K5, K6, S3, S6)
Understand how to select and evaluate AI tools and technologies.
- How to decide if an AI solution is right for your business
- How to test and review AI before fully implementing it
- Different types of technology (e.g. cloud vs in-house systems)
- Risks when working with external suppliers and partners
Day 5 – Managing Risk and Keeping Systems Secure (K7, K8, K11, S4, S8)
Learn how to protect your organisation when using AI.
- How to set clear rules and responsibilities for AI use
- How to identify and reduce risks
- Basc cyber security risks linked to AI systems
- How to respond if something goes wrong
Day 6 – People, Communication and AI Adoption (K9, K10, K12, K15, S5, S6, S10, S11)
Focus on supporting your people through AI change.
- How to balance automation with human decision-making
- How to involve and support staff who are not technical
- How to communicate AI clearly and build trust across teams
- Embedding AI into operational processes
- Measuring long-term value and ROI
- Continuous improvement and optimisation
- Future trends and scaling AI across the organisation

To be eligible, learners must be aged 19 or over and employed full-time. Individuals who are currently enrolled on an apprenticeship programme are not eligible to undertake standalone Apprenticeship Units.
This training is funded either through the Apprenticeship Levy or, for eligible non-levy paying employers, may be available at no cost.

Assessment & accreditation
Assessment: Operational AI Improvement Plan
Learners produce a 4000-word based business proposal outlining how AI could be introduced or improved within their area of responsibility.
Assessment could include but is not limited to:
- Identify a current operational challenge or inefficiency
- Recommend an appropriate AI or automation solution
- Outline benefits, risks, workforce impact, and governance considerations
- Explain how the change would be communicated and managed
