An exciting opportunity to learn how to use manual lathes to produce both one off and small batch components used in the production of customer company products, and to machine existing components to fit assemblies.

Precision Products manufacture a complete range of roll handling machinery for the paper industry. All products are manufactured in the UK to the highest standards, from one-off shafts to supplying all paper handling needs - from spares and repairs to complete assemblies.

Duties will include:

  • Produce a wide range of equipment for the paper industry
  • Learn a range of manual machining strategies to hold complex high value components
  • Follow well documented set up and machining Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for production parts
  • Work closely with internal and customer design teams
  • Precision Products (Portsmouth) Ltd is a small team of supportive, highly trained and experienced engineers
  • This is an excellent opportunity to enter a highly valued skill area
  • Start time may be earlier than 07.30 by agreement
  • Overtime (06.00-07.30 and 16.00-18.00) available by agreement
  • Starting salary is £5.50 per hour (40 hours) paid monthly

Other information:

Throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship you will be required to attend one of PETA’s training centres for off-the-job training.  The majority of training will be completed with your employer at your place of work. 

You will work towards the following qualifications: 

  • Level 2 Diploma in Machining (Foundation Knowledge)
  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (Foundation Competence)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Machining (Development Knowledge)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering – Machinist (Development Competence)
  • English Functional Skills Level 2 (If required)
  • Maths Functional Skills Level 2 (If required) 

The foundation phase will require 18 months of day release to PETA’s Vocational Skills Centre in Havant, during which you will be required to demonstrate competence in:

  • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements             
  • Working efficiently and effectively in an engineering environment     
  • Using and communicating technical information                   
  • Conducting business improvement activities            
  • Preparing and using lathes for turning operations                 
  • Preparing and using milling machines                      
  • Preparing and proving CNC machine tool programs             
  • Preparing and Using CNC Turning Machines            
  • Preparing and Using CNC Milling Machines              
  • Producing Mechanical Engineering Drawings using a CAD System
  • On successful completion of this phase you will progress to the development phase which will require a further 2 years of day release to complete the development knowledge qualification
  • Successful completion of the apprenticeship requires at least a ‘Pass’ in the Independent End Point Assessment

Qualifications required:

  • Math’s or equivalent qualification at grade C (4) or above
  • English or equivalent qualification at grade C (4) or above
  • A Performing Engineering Operations qualification is highly desirable
