Duties will include:

  • Cougar Engineers use specialist software to design industrial control systems.
  • You will be given a laptop with the appropriate design software platforms (Rockwell/Siemens/Schneider/etc)
  • In order to deliver solutions to their customer requirements, you will be learning and gaining levels of engineering skill and knowledge that will eventually see you performing as key part of a project engineering team. Before starting on real projects you will work towards achieving all of the competencies needed to become a Control Systems Engineer
  • You will learn how to use custom and proprietary software to monitor process parameters like levels/pressure/temperature and flow, to control things like pumps, conveyors and valves as part of the project
  • You will undertake verification activities to include testing hardware in non-operational locations to confirm performance and response times
  • The role will include an ability to correctly interpret technical information and specify suitable equipment to form part of an overall solution

Other information:

  • This position is based in Waterlooville, you must be able to get yourself onsite, on time.
  • Initially this programme will commence with 6 months off the job training at the engineering training centre in Havant to work towards the Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (Foundation Competence) during which you will complete the following foundation competence units:
  • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
  • Working efficiently and effectively in an engineering environment
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Conducting business improvement activities
  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques
  • Maintaining mechanical devices and equipment
  • Maintaining electrical equipment/systems
  • Maintaining electronic equipment/systems
  • General turning, milling and welding applications
  • Producing CAD models (drawings) using a CAD system
  • On completion of the above you will be further day released for the remainder of the apprenticeship to complete the Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge) BTEC
  • At the same time you will undertake the agreed competency units in the workplace working to complete the Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence)

Skills required:

  • Effective communication skills to enable you to complete written and verbal reports
  • You must be able to explain problems and how they were dealt with clearly and concisely
  • Awareness of health and safety considerations
  • A tenacious attitude towards learning new skills
  • You will need to be productive when working as part of a team and independently with minimum supervision

Personal qualities:

  • You need to be focused, self-driven and possess a ‘can do’ attitude,
  • You must have a ‘continuous improvement’ mindset and a strong desire to develop high quality products
  • A methodical approach to problem solving and testing is required

Qualifications required:

  • Already hold an A level, or L3 engineering BTEC (or equivalent) qualification
  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs or equivalent (inc Maths, English, Science – preferably Physics) at Grade C (4) or above
