An exciting opportunity in a dynamic working environment learning how to program, set and operate a range of Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machinery.  You will be taught to use both dedicated conversational and 3D CAM programming.

Good Directions has an enthusiastic engineering team using a range of modern CNC Milling /Turning machines. They have interesting and diverse work combined with a supportive team, focused on delivering quality apprenticeships.

Duties will include:

  • Learn to use, set and operate three axis Dugard mill / turn centres
  • Learn about a range of machining strategies to increase accuracy and productivity
  • Use dedicated conversational programming language
  • Create and manipulate 3D models to programme CNC machined parts using Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software
  • Programme a range of three-axis machines
  • Programme combination Mill/Turning machinery
  • Learn to set a range of cutting tools including unique modified cutters
  • Learn to self-inspect complex parts using mechanical inspection equipment

  • The company is located in next to the railway station in Botley, you will need to be able to get there reliably

  • You will be trained, supported and monitored throughout the process

Throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship you will be required to attend  PETA’s training centres for off-the-job training.  The majority of training will be completed with your employer at your place of work.

You will be employed whilst you are completing your apprenticeship this will include initially18 months of day release training at PETA Ltd where you will complete your Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) qualification. This will consist of:

  • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
  • Working efficiently and effectively in an engineering environment
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Conducting business improvement activities
  • Preparing and using lathes for turning operations
  • Preparing and using milling machines
  • Preparing and proving CNC machine tool programs
  • Preparing and using CNC mill / turn machines
  • Producing mechanical engineering drawings using CAD System

You will also complete the Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Technical Knowledge)

You will be expected to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) delivered in the workplace by your PETA assessor. You will be day released for two years to complete a Technical certificate (Level 3) as part of your advanced apprenticeship framework. This will be the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge). This part of the programme will take a further two years.

You will also achieve Functional Skills in maths and English at level 2 (if you have not already achieved C+ or a Grade 4+ GCSE in these disciplines).

Skills required:

  • You will have a good level of dexterity and hand skills
  • An interest in contributing towards manufacturing mechanical assemblies is desirable
  • You will have good hand to eye co-ordination and hand skills
  • Your logical approach to problem solving will enable you to perform to make a good contribution to all aspects of the job
  • You need to be able to learn through instruction and experience

Personal qualities:

  • Your motivation and drive are the assets that will be best appreciated. 
  • You will need good communication skills, as you will develop into a role where the ability to communicate on a technical level with peers and management is crucial
  • You will need to be open minded and willing to develop your knowledge and skills to support your future development

Qualifications required:

  • 3 GCSEs at grade C (4) or above (or equivalents) including Maths, science and ITC are essential.  Additionally GCSE English at grade C (4) or above is desirable
  • Additionally a science or engineering qualification are highly desirable
  • Any CAD/CAM experience/qualifications will be looked upon favourably
