This is a practical manufacturing engineering role ensuring the production process of the components required to meet the bespoke order runs smoothly.

A bespoke refrigeration equipment manufacturer and design company and part of the FSW group of companies, Beacon’s speciality is bespoke design offering custom build & design service of the very highest quality, from basic dressed condensing units to multi compressor packs.

Duties will include:

You will gain knowledge of how the company operates, and experience the following:

  • Practical knowledge of hand tools, machine and mechanical processes
  • Familiarity and competency in a range of skills, including brazing, silver soldering, pipe bending, drilling applying insulation, pressure testing and fault finding.
  • Maintaining comprehensive records
  • Understand the ‘goods in’ and ‘goods out’ process
  • Gain knowledge of how products are planned and scheduled to be built
  • Assist in the build of products using a wide variety of techniques
  • Understand the health and safety implications of each task undertaken
  • Become involved in the production quality inspection process at component, sub-assembly and final product stages
  • Understand safe working practices, risk assessment, the basic principles of test, and investigative and fault finding techniques 
  • Gain knowledge of the computerised drawing packages and assist in the production of design schemes through to releasing drawings
  • You will be responsible for producing work that meets the Companies Quality Standards, following industry approved working procedures.

Initially this programme will commence with 18 months (day release) off the job training at the PETA Engineering Training Centre in Havant to work towards the Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (Foundation Competence) during which you will complete the following foundation competence units:

  • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
  • Working efficiently and effectively in an engineering environment
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Conducting business improvement activities
  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques                      
  • Maintaining mechanical devices and equipment                  
  • Maintaining electrical equipment/systems                                       
  • Maintaining electronic equipment/systems              
  • General turning, milling and welding applications                 
  • Producing CAD models (drawings) using a CAD system
  • Functional Skills maths and English (if required)      

On completion of the above you will be further day released for the remainder of the apprenticeship to complete the Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge) BTEC

  • At the same time you will undertake the agreed competency units in the workplace working to complete the Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence)

Other information:

  • The company is located on a busy industrial estate in Hilsea. Applicants must be able to get themselves there reliably and on time.
  • The nearest railway station is Hilsea (15 minutes walk)

Skills required:

  • Effective communication skills to enable you to complete written and verbal reports
  • You must be able to explain problems and how they were dealt with clearly and concisely
  • Awareness of health and safety considerations
  • A tenacious attitude towards learning new skills
  • You will need to be productive when working as part of a team and independently with minimum supervision
  • An analytical approach to problem solving

Personal qualities:

  • Possess a desire to achieve learning goals and qualifications
  • Be punctual and hardworking
  • Able to work under pressure to achieve production deadlines
  • The ability to work within a team and under own initiative when required
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • A full driving licence would be an advantage
  • An understanding of, and the ability to network effectively would be an advantage

Qualifications required:

  • 5 GCSEs at grade C (4) or above (to include math’s, English, and science)
