You will learn to use a range of manual and Computer Numerically Controlled machines including Lathes, Mills and EDM equipment. You will also learn how to use CAM becoming involved with all aspects of Plastic Injection Mould tool building and maintenance.

SMR have a well-established apprenticeship programme that has resulted in many of their Toolroom staff now being ex-apprentices. They are creating a conveyor belt of talent that will assure that their need for skilled staff is met over the coming years.

Duties will include:

  • You will learn to interpret a range of technical information including hard copy and 3D models
  • Learn to programme and set a wide range of manual and CNC machinery
  • Learn to build mould tools for a range of international automotive industry applications
  • You will also be making gauges and fixtures to tight tolerances.
  • With experience you will learn how to identify suitable machining strategies for a range mould tool components
  • You will learn how to manipulate 3D Models using Computer Aided Manufacturing techniques to create programmes to machine complex 3D forms and cavities
  • You will also be hand finishing parts and assembling tools for manufacturing use
  • You will also undertake maintenance and modification of the SMR mould tools on site, this will include strip clean fault diagnosis and repair/modification of tools

  • The company are looking to recruit the right caliber individual for this role and see personal attributes as a key part of securing the personnel they want.
  • The company is located on the Portchester Castle Trading Industrial Estate, you will need to be able to get yourself here reliably. (There is a train station nearby).

Throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship you will be required to attend PETA’s Havant training centre for off-the-job training. The majority of skills development training in years 2, 3 and 4 will be completed with your employer at your place of work.

You will work towards the following qualifications:

  • You will be employed whilst you are completing your apprenticeship this will include 18 months of day release training at PETA Ltd where you will complete your Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) qualification. This will include:
  • Preparing and using Manual Turning Machines
  • Preparing and using Manual Milling Machines
  • Preparing and using CNC Milling Machines
  • Preparing and using CNC Turning Machines
  • Using fitting and assembly Techniques
  • Producing Mechanical Engineering Drawings using a CAD System
  • Conducting business improvement activities
  • You will be expected to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Toolmaker and Tool and Die Maintenance (Development Competence) delivered in the workplace by your PETA assessor. You will be day released for two years to complete a Technical certificate (Level 3) as part of your advanced apprenticeship framework. This will be the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge).
  • You will also achieve Functional Skills in Math’s and English at level 2 (if you have not already achieved C+ or a Grade 4+ in these disciplines).

  • Your logical approach to problem solving will enable you to develop and flourish in this position
  • An awareness of H&S issues regarding working in a dynamic work environment
  • You will have a good level of dexterity hand skills
  • Demonstrate an interest in contributing towards manufacturing mechanical assemblies are desirable
  • You will have good hand to eye co-ordination and hand skills
  • You need to be able to learn through instruction and experience

Personal qualities:

  • Your motivation and drive are the assets that will be best appreciated
  • You will have a good attention to detail and the ability to plan activities identifying possible problems in advance
  • This is a robust working environment that will require discipline and a willingness to help your team achieve department goals
  • You will need good communication skills as you will develop into a role where the ability to communicate on a technical level with peers and management will be important

Qualifications required:

  • 4 GCSE's at grade C or above (or equivalents) to include Maths and English
  • Additionally a science or engineering qualification is highly desirable
  • If you have any CAD/CAM experience/qualifications or have any other engineering experience this will also be considered favourably.
