Learn to use both Metal and Tungsten Inert Gas (MIG/TIG) techniques to make structurally sound welds. You will also undertake basic fabrication activities. You will work towards achieving welding “Codes” that meet the requirements of the Aerospace industry.

Duties will include:

  • Site safety is of paramount importance to Eaton. You will complete a period of off the job training as well as a company specific health and safety induction before learning how to use the equipment on site
  • You will be trained to weld a range of materials using TIG and MIG welding techniques
  • This will include learning how to set up the correct power (parameter) settings, select the correct consumables
  • You will learn to follow Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) to weld a variety of joint types.
  • You will eventually be to able to achieve high quality welds that pass visual and specialist inspection (Visual, Dye Penetrant and Radiographic (x-ray) meeting International Standards.
  • Attend PETA and complete coursework on time and to the required standard.
  • Take on additional responsibility at the end of year 1.

Other information:

  • The company is located on a busy industrial estate in Hilsea. Applicants must be able to get themselves there reliably and on time.

Throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship you will be required to attend one of PETA’s training centres for off-the-job training.  The majority of training will be completed with your employer at your place of work.

  • You will be employed whilst you are completing your apprenticeship. This will be structured as 18 months of day release (1 day a week) of skills training at PETA Ltd where you will complete the Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) which comprises:
  • Mandatory Units
  • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
  • Working efficiently and effectively in an engineering environment
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Conducting business improvement activities
  • Optional Units
  • Producing engineering project plans
  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques
  • Preparing and using semi-automatic MIG, MAG and flux cored arc welding equipment
  • Producing sheet metal components and assemblies
  • Preparing and Using Manual TIG or Plasma-arc Welding Equipment
  • General Welding Applications

Skills required:

  • A good logical approach to problem solving.
  • Awareness of health and safety issues regarding working in dynamic work environment.
  • A good level of dexterity and skills using hand tools is desirable.
  • An interest in manufacturing is important.
  • Ability to become an integral part of the team.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to plan activities identifying possible problems in advance

Personal qualities:

  • You will need to be focused, self-motivated, trustworthy and have a team player mentality.
  • You must be self-disciplined and possess a willingness to help the team achieve department targets.
  • An ability to understand and act on technical information is desirable.
  • Willing to work flexible locations and hours including undertaking shift work in the apprenticeship.

Qualifications required:

  • 3 GCSE's at grade C or above (or equivalents) to include Maths and English are essential
  • Additionally a science or engineering qualification is highly desirable
  • Any engineering experience or qualifications will be looked upon favourably
