This is an exciting opportunity at Tangmere Nurseries, learning to undertake electrical/mechanical maintenance. You will learn to complete breakdown and preventative maintenance tasks on a range of specialised equipment ensure that it is running efficiently.

Tangmere are located in West Sussex, their nursery brings together state-of-the-art glasshouse technology, growing systems, and packing facilities. All crop is grown in climate-controlled glasshouses using hydroponic systems without the need for soil. The site has a large amount of equipment and plant on site including heat/energy generation, environmental controls, automated watering and ventilation systems, conveyors and handling equipment. We have put in place support with assigned mentors to help ensure that your apprenticeship is a success.

Duties will include:

  • Work safely at all times
  • Learn how to undertake electro-mechanical maintenance work on equipment and machinery at the Tangmere site
  • Become competent conducting routine visual inspections of plant & equipment
  • Learn how to replace consumables such as filters, belts, pumps, fans & lighting
  • Become competent  completing planned preventative maintenance on heat generation, power generation and environmental controls
  • Learn how to undertake breakdown maintenance on the automated equipment including transfer and processing equipment
  • Become competent undertaking fault diagnosis in a logical way identifying the root causes of faults on the equipment on site
  • Complete legible maintenance and equipment documentation

 

Other information:

Throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship you will be required to attend PETA’s Havant training centre for off-the-job training.  The majority of your development training will be completed with your employer at your place of work. You will be employed whilst you are completing your apprenticeship this will include 18 months of day release training at PETA Ltd where you will complete your Level 2 Advanced Engineering (Foundation Competence) qualification. This will include:

  • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety 
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Maintaining mechanical devices and equipment                   
  • Maintaining electrical equipment/systems                            
  • Maintaining electronic equipment/systems
  • General turning, milling and welding applications      
  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques           
  • Producing CAD models (drawings) using a CAD system
  • Working efficiently and effectively in an engineering environment
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Conducting business improvement activities

You will then pass through the foundation Gateway and progress onto your Level 3 development programme and complete:

  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge)
  • EAL Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Engineering (Development Competence)

Skills required:

  • Excellent verbal communications skills are required as this job entails daily contact with all shift personnel and the Shift Manager
  • You will have good written communication skills enabling you to complete shift reports.
  • You will be objective and analytical in your approach to problem solving being able to explain problems and how they were dealt with clearly and concisely     
  • Awareness of health and safety considerations.

Personal qualities:

  • Once trained you will be able to work effectively when supervised, with the flexibility to work on your own initiative when required
  • Good eyesight and hand to eye coordination
  • Capable of working in confined spaces
  • You must be able to work flexibly in line with the requirements of the post

Qualifications required:

  • Minimum of 3 GCSEs or equivalent (inc Math’s, English, Science) at Grade C
  • BTEC or relevant Engineering qualification is desirable
  • A or AS Level qualifications or equivalents in relevant subject including math’s or science will be looked upon favourably
