An Apprenticeship is a great opportunity to start or develop your career with a salaried job and free training.

Learn to use both Metal and Tungsten Inert Gas (MIG/TIG) to make structurally sound welds, and undertake complex fabrication activities. You will work towards achieving welding “Codes” in order to meet industry standards.

Tuco Developments are experienced fabricators and welders skilled in the art of building metal structures by cutting, bending, welding and assembling processes. In addition they machine parts and structures from various other raw materials.

Duties will include:

  • Site safety is of paramount importance to Tuco Developments. You will complete a period of off the job training as well as a company specific health and safety induction before learning how to use the equipment on site
  • You will be trained to weld a range of materials using TIG and MIG welding techniques
  • This will include learning how to set up the correct power (parameter) settings, select the correct consumables
  • You will learn to follow Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) to weld a variety of joint types.
  • You will learn how to cut various materials by sawing, shearing or chiselling
  • Employ bending techniques by hammering (manual or powered) via press brakes and similar tools.
  • You will become accomplished at joining the pieces of material through welding, binding with adhesives and riveting

Other information:

  • The company is located on a busy industrial estate in Hilsea. Applicants must be able to get themselves there reliably and on time.
  • The nearest railway station is Hilsea (15 minutes walk)
  • During the apprenticeship you will work towards successful completion of EAL Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (Competence)  During which you will complete the following units:
    • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
    • Working efficiently and effectively in an engineering environment
    • Using and communicating technical information
    • Conducting business improvement activities
    • Producing components using hand fitting techniques           
    • Preparing and using semi-automatic MIG, MAG and flux cored arc welding equipment           
    • Producing sheet metal components and assemblies            
    • Producing engineering project plans            
    • Preparing and Using Manual TIG or Plasma-arc Welding Equipment  
    • General Welding Applications
  • You will also need to achieve Maths and English functional skills at level 2 if GCSE (or equivalent) grades A* to C, or 9 to 4 not held
  • On successful completion of the above you will undertake the independent end point assessment consisting of:
    • A theoretical knowledge test
    • A practical / oral examination

A professional interview to cover the knowledge learned, the role of the welder in industry, and the professional behaviours as listed in the apprenticeship standard    

Skills required:

  • A good logical approach to problem solving.
  • Awareness of health and safety issues regarding working in dynamic work environment.
  • A good level of dexterity and skills using hand tools is desirable.
  • An interest in manufacturing is important.
  • Ability to become an integral part of the team.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to plan activities identifying possible problems in advance

Personal qualities:

  • You will need to be focused, self-motivated, trustworthy and have a team player mentality.
  • You must be self-disciplined and possess a willingness to help the team achieve department targets.
  • An ability to understand and act on technical information is desirable.
  • Willing to work flexible locations and hours including undertaking shift work in the apprenticeship

Qualifications required:

  • 2 GCSEs at grade C (4) or above (or equivalent in maths and English) are desirable but not essential.
