You will learn how to set and operate the CNC Milling and Turning machines. You will learn how to set tooling and work holding devices, load, prove and edit programs. You will also maximise production by applying set up time reduction techniques. You will be measuring components to check they meet specifications working on components for the marine industry. Lewmar will provide excellent support & training

Lewmar are based in Havant close to public transport hubs and the A27. They have a strong track record in training and developing apprentices to become skilled engineers. The company manufactures rope management systems, deck hardware, marine glass solutions and ancillary yacht related equipment. They produce prototype and low volume components assemblies. You will be working as part of a small team manufacturing new and bespoke products. This is an environment where team work flexibility and application are key assets.

Throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship you will be required to attend PETA’s Havant training center for off-the-job training.  The majority of skills development training in years 2, 3 and 4 will be completed with your employer at your place of work.

You will work towards the following qualifications:

  • You will be employed whilst you are completing your apprenticeship this will include 18 months of day release training at PETA Ltd where you will complete your Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) qualification. This will include:
  • Preparing and using Manual Turning Machines
  • Preparing and using Manual Milling Machines
  • Preparing and using CNC Milling Machines
  • Preparing and using CNC Turning Machines
  • Using fitting and assembly Techniques.
  • Producing Mechanical Engineering Drawings using a CAD System
  • Conducting business improvement activities
  • You will also complete the Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Technical Knowledge).
  • You will be expected to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) delivered in the workplace by your PETA assessor. You will be day released for a further two years to complete a Technical certificate (Level 3) as part of your advanced apprenticeship framework. This will be the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge).

You will also achieve Functional Skills in Math’s and English at level 2 (if you have not already achieved C+ or a Grade 4+ in these disciplines)

Duties will include:

  • Follow company safety procedures and Health and Safety legislation
  • Learn how to read and interpret drawings, data and documentation used to produce machined components
  • Be able to select and set up the correct tooling and work holding devices
  • Learn how to set and adjust machine operating parameters to maximise efficiently
  • Learn how to edit using the machine control interface and operate CNC Milling and turning  machines
  • Learn about a range machining strategies and innovative work holding methods
  • Select and use a range of measuring and testing equipment to check components are to the required quality and accuracy

Skills required:

  • You will have a good level of dexterity and hand skills
  • Demonstrate an interest in manufacturing mechanical components is highly desirable
  • You will have good hand to eye co-ordination
  • Your logical approach to problem solving will enable you to perform to make a good contribution to all aspects of the job
  • You need to be able to learn through instruction and experience
