You will learn how to programme set and operate the manual and High Speed 4 axis CNC Mills lathes and mills. You will be working on components for the marine and defence industries. You will learn about innovative work holding and machining strategies in a range of materials with the possibility of learning how to programme off-line.

PRS Machining is a precision machining company specialising in the manufacture of one off components and small batches of complex components in a variety of materials including plastics, aluminium alloy, steel, stainless steel and titanium. PRS use high speed machining techniques to produce jigs, fixtures and prototypes for the sub-sea and oil sectors as well as parts for marine and the defence industries.

Throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship you will be required to attend PETA’s Havant training center for off-the-job training.  The majority of skills development training in years 2, 3 and 4 will be completed with your employer at your place of work.

You will work towards the following qualifications:

  • You will be employed whilst you are completing your apprenticeship this will include 18 months of day release training at PETA Ltd where you will complete your Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) qualification. This will include:
  • Preparing and using Manual Turning Machines
  • Preparing and using Manual Milling Machines
  • Preparing and using CNC Milling Machines
  • Preparing and using CNC Turning Machines
  • Using fitting and assembly Techniques.
  • Producing Mechanical Engineering Drawings using a CAD System
  • Conducting business improvement activities
  • You will also complete the Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Technical Knowledge).
  • You will be expected to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) delivered in the workplace by your PETA assessor. You will be day released for a further two years to complete a Technical certificate (Level 3) as part of your advanced apprenticeship framework. This will be the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge).
  • You will also achieve Functional Skills in Math’s and English at level 2 (if you have not already achieved C+ or a Grade 4+ in these disciplines)

Duties will include:

  • Learn how to work in accordance with company safety procedures and follow Health and Safety legislation
  • Become competent reading and interpreting the data and documentation used to produce machined components
  • Learn how to select and set up tooling and work holding devices
  • Become competent setting and adjusting the machine operating parameters to produce components to the required specification
  • Learn how to set feeds and speeds for roughing and finishing operations
  • Become competent operating a range of CNC and manual machines
  • Learn how to programme and edit using the machine control interface
  • Become an expert using a range of machining strategies
  • Become competent in making changes that will increase accuracy and productivity
  • Learn how to create and manipulate CAM programming to identify the best way to manufacture parts
  • You will be able to program a range of 3 and 4 axis CNC machines using post processing techniques at the end of the training programme
  • Become competent selecting and using a range of measuring and testing equipment to check components are to the required quality and accuracy


Skills required:

  • You will have a good level of dexterity and hand skills
  • Demonstrate an interest in manufacturing mechanical components is highly desirable
  • You will have good hand to eye co-ordination
  • Your logical approach to problem solving will enable you to perform to make a good contribution to all aspects of the job
  • You need to be able to learn through instruction and experience
