You will learn how to use inspection and test equipment ensuring components meet customer specifications. This will include using mechanical measuring equipment like Vernier’s, Micrometres, gauges and shadowgraph’s. To support your development you will learn about the multi-axis CNC Turning and Milling machining activities that take place on site

Global Orthopedics are a CNC machining company specialising in the manufacture of plates, screws and rods for the support of traumatic bone breaks and fractures of animals. They manufacture proprietary plates for customisation by surgeons and screws for a range of animal sizes. Surgical grade stainless steels are used with dedicated thread-forms that have specialist applications. The company’s business is mainly CNC turning using sliding head lathes, however there are also a number of CNC mills on site. Duties will include:

  • Be able to work in accordance with company safety procedures and follow Health and Safety legislation
  • Read and interpret relevant data and documentation used to produce finished components
  • Select and use a range of measuring and test equipment to check components are to the required quality and accuracy
  • Competently complete inspection and compliance documentation
  • Assist in identifying root causes of problems and work with the production team to solve them
  • Report to your line lead in accordance with company procedures
  • Learn about the CNC machinery on site
  • You will be expected to work flexibly as part of a highly skilled team

Training to be provided:

Throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship you will be required to attend PETA’s Havant training center for off-the-job training.  The majority of skills development training in years 2 will be completed with your employer at your place of work.

You will work towards the following qualifications:

  • You will be employed whilst you are completing your apprenticeship this will include 18 months of day release training at PETA Ltd where you will complete your Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) qualification. This will include:
  • Preparing and using Manual Turning Machines
  • Preparing and using Manual Milling Machines
  • Preparing and using CNC Milling Machines
  • Preparing and using CNC Turning Machines
  • Using fitting and assembly Techniques.
  • Producing Mechanical Engineering Drawings using a CAD System
  • Conducting business improvement activities
  • You will also complete the Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Technical Knowledge).

You will also achieve Functional Skills in Math’s and English at level 1 (if you have not already achieved C+ or a Grade 4+ in these disciplines)

Skills required:

  • You will have a good level of dexterity and hand skills
  • Demonstrate an interest in manufacturing mechanical components is highly desirable
  • You will have good hand to eye co-ordination
  • Your logical approach to problem solving will enable you to perform to make a good contribution to all aspects of the job
  • You need to be able to learn through instruction and experience

Personal qualities:

  • Your motivation and drive are the assets that will be best appreciated. 
  • You will need good communication skills as you will develop into a role where the ability to communicate on a technical level with peers and management is a crucial skill
  • You will need to be open minded and willing to develop your knowledge and skills to support your future development

Qualifications required:

  • 3 GCSE's at grade C or above (or equivalents) to include Math’s and English
  • Additionally a science or engineering qualification is highly desirable
  • Any engineering experience or qualifications will be looked upon favorably


  • 20 days annual leave plus 8 days statutory bank/public holidays.
