This is an exciting opportunity to learn all aspects of the quality role interpreting technical information and specifications. You will undertake the measurement of precision manufactured parts and make decisions about overall quality and identifying compliant and non-compliant parts using CMM and conventional mechanical measuring equipment.

Working with a range of Formula 1 teams, Aerospace and other precision orientated industries Langstone Engineering Ltd offer Toolmaking & Precision Engineering Services including Prototype Engineering & Component Manufacture.
Accredited to BS EN ISO 9001:2008. Utilising their engineering expertise, they assist customers with the design and development of new tooling and prototypes. This is supported by a comprehensive hands on fast-track supply service with a full CAD/CAM support office manufacturing from customer electronic files. This is transferred to their networked CNC machines including 2,3,4 & 5-Axis 3D CNC mills & driven tooling CNC lathes. The company have an established apprenticeship programme with a proven track record of producing highly skilled engineers.

Duties will include:

  • Work safely at all times, complying with health, safety and environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements
  • Learn how to interpret engineering drawings and Standard Operating Procedures (S.O.P’s)
  • Learn how to check supplied and manufactured parts to ensure they meet tolerances and technical specifications.
  • Learn to identify and use the correct equipment to carry out the inspection of mechanical products
  • Become competent using Vernier’s, Micrometers, Height Gauges, Go/NoGo gauges as well as Co-Ordinate Measuring Machines (CMM)
  • Learn how to follow the correct inspection procedure for the product or equipment being inspected
  • Become able to check linear measurements as well as geometric features
  • Learn how to identify and record out‐of‐specification features, following the Langstone procedure
  • Become able to undertake investigations into out of tolerance parts and where appropriate, obtain a concession for out‐of‐specification products
  • Learn how to quarantine out of specification products clearly marking them as out of tolerance
  • Become able to move compliant products to the correct location on completion of the inspection activities
  • Learn how to carry out first offs and patrol inspection activities
  • You will eventually be able to confidently deal with problems within their control and report those that cannot be solved

Training to be provided:

Throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship you will be required to attend PETA’s Havant training centre for off-the-job training.  The majority of skills development training in years 2, 3 and 4 will be completed with your employer at your place of work.

You will work towards the following qualifications:

  • You will be employed whilst you are completing your apprenticeship this will include 18 months of day release training at PETA Ltd where you will complete your Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) qualification. This will include:
  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques
  • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety 
  • Working efficiently and effectively in an engineering environment
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Conducting business improvement activities
  • Maintaining mechanical devices and equipment                   
  • Maintaining electrical equipment/systems                            
  • Maintaining electronic equipment/systems               
  • General turning, milling and welding applications                 
  • Producing CAD models (drawings) using a CAD system

Skills required:

  • You be objective when making decisions
  • Methodical in the way you work
  • Have a logical approach to problem solving will enable you to perform to make a good contribution to all aspects of the job
  • You need to be able to learn through instruction and experience
  • You will need to be open minded and willing to develop your knowledge and skills to support your future development

Personal qualities:

  • Your motivation, drive and focus are the assets that will be best appreciated. 
  • You will possess good communication skills as you will develop into a role where the ability to communicate on a technical level with peers and management is a crucial skill
  • You will need to be open minded and willing to develop your knowledge and skills to support your future development

Qualifications required:

  • 3 GCSE's at grade C or above (or equivalents) to include Maths and English are essential
  • Additionally a science or engineering qualification is highly desirable
  • Any engineering experience or qualifications will be looked upon favorably
