You will learn how to dismantle and maintain mould tools, diagnose faults and conduct remedial work. You will also rebuild assemblies using fitting & finishing techniques. You will also learn all the skills involved in toolmaking i.e. setting and operating machinery to manufacture components to tight tolerances and measuring parts to ensure accuracy

Established for over 50 years, the business has both AS9100 and TS16949 accreditations. ENL’s fully equipped tool manufacturing service is the cornerstone of the business. ENL control the manufacture of tooling and maintain customer tools in-house. The company have an established track record delivering apprenticeships, they want to recruit and train an apprentice to be multi-skilled. The toolroom has recently be relocated and expanded. The business has an ongoing need for highly skilled engineers; they have started a pipeline of toolmakers and are keen to extend this across other areas as the part of their talent management plan.

Duties will include:

  • You learn how to work safely following workshop and production area safety systems at all times
  • With experience you will learn how to identify suitable machining strategies for a range mould tool components manufacturing components to tight tolerances
  • Learn how to build new mould tools for a range of industrial applications
  • You be performing regular preventative maintenance activities on mould tools, this will involve stripping tools to component level conducting visual inspections identifying damage and faults and conducting remedial work as required
  • You will be working with highly skilled engineers conducting breakdown maintenance on tools mounted in injection moulding presses
  • Once your have sufficient experience you will be undertaking modification of the mould tools on site
  • The role will also include hand finishing parts and assembling tools for manufacturing use
  • You will learn how to identify root causes of problems, completing repairs and ordering replacement parts as required
  • You will learn how to use a range of tool room equipment including mills and lathes and grinders
  • The role will include confirming that plastic injection moulding machines can be returned to production carrying out effective handover procedures
  • You will complete the required necessary documentation at the end of your activity, prior to handing back to the production operatives.

Training to be provided:

Throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship you will be required to attend PETA’s Havant training centre for off-the-job training. The majority of skills development training in years 2, 3 and 4 will be completed with your employer at your place of work.

You will work towards the following qualifications:

  • You will be employed whilst you are completing your apprenticeship this will include 18 months of day release training at PETA Ltd where you will complete your Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) qualification. This will include:
  • Preparing and using Manual Turning Machines
  • Preparing and using Manual Milling Machines
  • Preparing and using CNC Milling Machines
  • Preparing and using CNC Turning Machines
  • Using fitting and assembly Techniques.
  • Producing Mechanical Engineering Drawings using a CAD System
  • Conducting business improvement activities
  • You will also complete the Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Technical Knowledge).
  • You will be expected to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) delivered in the workplace by your PETA assessor. You will be day released for a further two years to complete a Technical certificate (Level 3) as part of your advanced apprenticeship framework. This will be the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge).

You will also achieve Functional Skills in Math’s and English at level 2 (if you have not already achieved C+ or a Grade 4+ in these disciplines)

Skills required:

  • You will have a good level of dexterity and hand skills
  • Being able to demonstrate an interest in manufacturing mechanical components is highly desirable
  • You will have good hand to eye co-ordination
  • Your logical approach to problem solving will enable you to perform to make a good contribution to all aspects of the job
  • You need to be able to learn through instruction and experience

Personal qualities:

  • Your motivation and drive are the assets that will be best appreciated. 
  • You will need good communication skills as you will develop into a role where the ability to communicate on a technical level with peers and management is a crucial skill
  • You will need to be open minded and willing to develop your knowledge and skills to support your future development

Qualifications required:

  • 3 GCSE's at grade C or above (or equivalents) to include Math’s and English
  • Additionally, a science or engineering qualification is highly desirable
  • Any engineering experience or qualifications will be looked upon favorably
