This is an exciting position learning to use Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding to make structurally sound welds between parts. You will be welding assemblies for the Pharmaceutical, Nuclear and Industrial sectors. You will develop your skills eventually welding in different positions, materials and joints to complete a range of welding codes.

The company site in Farlington is close to public transport hubs and the A27. The company have a strong track record in training and developing apprentices to become skilled engineers. The company manufactures a variety of filter housings and pressure vessels for the Pharmaceutical, Medical, Industrial and Nuclear industries. They produce low and medium volume components and assemblies. You will be working as part of a small team manufacturing machined products. Duties will include:

  • You will be trained to weld a range of materials using TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas).
  • This will include learning how to set up the correct power (parameter) settings, select the consumable and follow a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) to weld different joint types.
  • Your aim over time will be to achieve a high-quality weld that will pass surface and internal inspection including Visual, Dye Penetrant and Radiographic (x-ray) to International Standards.
  • The parts will be a range of welds in mainly round products in different positions. You will be required to achieve weld "Codes" to meet the requirements of welding pressure vessels standards.
  • Produce products to a high degree of accuracy and finish, ensuring PALL’s quality standards are achieved.
  • Accurately complete data entries on databases and routing documents
  • Site safety is of paramount importance to PALL, you will complete a period of off the job training as well as a PALL specific health and safety induction before learning how to use the equipment on site
  • Attend PETA and complete coursework on time and to the required standard.
  • Take on additional responsibility at the end of year 1.
  • Become competent reading and interpret drawings, data and documentation used to produce machined components

Other information:

  • This apprenticeship will lead onto a Level 3 Welding Apprenticeship
  • You will need to be able to get to PALL’s Walton Road facility reliably
  • This is a continuous improvement environment, you will b expected to contribute to the improvement activities undertaken onsite
  • Focus, motivation and enthusiasm are more important to PALL than academic success.

You will be employed whilst you are completing your apprenticeship. This will be structured as 18 months of day release (1 day a week) of skills training at PETA Ltd where you will complete foundation competence qualification EAL Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering (Welding).

  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques
  • Preparing and using semi-automatic MIG, MAG and flux cored arc welding equipment

  • Producing engineering project plans
  • General Welding Applications                     
  • You will complete functional skills at level 2 in math’s and English(if required).

Your independent end point assessment will comprise of:

A theoretical knowledge test, a practical/oral examination to be followed by a professional interview covering the application of knowledge learned during the apprenticeship, the role of the welder in industry and the professional behaviour’s as listed in the Apprenticeship Standard

Skills required:

  • A good logical approach to problem solving.
  • Awareness of health and safety issues regarding working in dynamic work environment.
  • A good level of dexterity and skills using hand tools is desirable.
  • An interest in manufacturing is important.
  • Ability to become an integral part of the team.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to plan activities identifying possible problems in advance.

Personal qualities:

  • You will need to be focused, self-motivated, trustworthy and have a team player mentality.
  • You must be self-disciplined and possess a willingness to help the team achieve department targets.
  • An ability to understand and act on technical information is desirable.
  • Willing to work flexibly including working overtime when required

Qualifications required:

  • 2 GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent in Maths and English) are desirable but not essential.
  • Qualifications or experience in engineering (specifically manufacturing) are highly desirable.
