You will learn how to programme, set and operate the manual and CNC Milling and Turning machines. You will learn how to load prove and edit programs using the machine programming languages working on components in stainless steel for the filtration industry. You will work with an experienced team learning about work holding and machining strategies

The company site in Farlington is close to public transport hubs and the A27. The company have a strong track record in training and developing apprentices to become skilled engineers. The company manufactures a variety of filter housings and pressure vessels for the Pharmaceutical, Medical, Industrial and Nuclear industries. They produce low and medium volume components and assemblies. You will be working as part of a small team manufacturing machined products. Duties will include:

  • Learn how to follow company safety procedures and Health and Safety legislation
  • Become competent reading and interpret drawings, data and documentation used to produce machined components
  • You will be taught how to select and set up the correct tooling and work holding devices
  • Learn how to set and adjust machine operating parameters to maximise efficiently
  • Learn how to edit using the machine control interface and operate CNC Milling and Turning Machines
  • Learn how programme using machine programing language to generate toolpaths and manufacture to components to drawing specifications
  • Learn about a range machining strategies and innovative work holding methods
  • Select and use a range of measuring and testing equipment to check components are to the required quality and accuracy
  • Accurately complete data entries on databases and routing documents

Throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship you will be required to attend PETA’s Havant training center for off-the-job training.  The majority of skills development training in years 2, 3 and 4 will be completed with your employer at your place of work.

You will work towards the following qualifications:

  • You will be employed whilst you are completing your apprenticeship this will include 18 months of day release training at PETA Ltd where you will complete your Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) qualification. This will include:
  • Preparing and using Manual Turning Machines
  • Preparing and using Manual Milling Machines
  • Preparing and using CNC Milling Machines
  • Preparing and using CNC Turning Machines
  • Using fitting and assembly Techniques.
  • Producing Mechanical Engineering Drawings using a CAD System
  • Conducting business improvement activities
  • You will also complete the Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Technical Knowledge).
  • You will be expected to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) delivered in the workplace by your PETA assessor. You will be day released for a further two years to complete a Technical certificate (Level 3) as part of your advanced apprenticeship framework. This will be the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge).
  • You will also achieve Functional Skills in Math’s and English at level 2 (if you have not already achieved C+ or a Grade 4+ in these disciplines)

Skills required:

  • You will have a good level of dexterity and hand skills
  • Demonstrate an interest in manufacturing mechanical components is highly desirable
  • You will have good hand to eye co-ordination
  • Your logical approach to problem solving will enable you to perform to make a good contribution to all aspects of the job
  • You need to be able to learn through instruction and experience

Personal qualities:

  • Your motivation and drive are the assets that will be best appreciated. 
  • You will need good communication skills as you will develop into a role where the ability to communicate on a technical level with peers and management is a crucial skill
  • You will need to be open minded and willing to develop your knowledge and skills to support your future development

Qualifications required:

  • 3 GCSE's at grade C or above (or equivalents) to include Math’s and English
  • Additionally a science or engineering qualification is highly desirable
  • Any engineering experience or qualifications will be looked upon favorably
