The main role is to support Portico’s Crane team but will also support the Facilities Department. You will complete planned preventative and reactive maintenance as well as undertaking decommissioning activities when plant is being removed. Other activities will include installing, testing, servicing, replacing and repairing the equipment onsite.

Portico Shipping Limited offers specialist stevedoring, warehousing and distribution services as well as customs clearance and ships agency. Occupying a 22-acre site in Portsmouth, Portico employees 180 people in a variety of operational and office roles. Portico have an opportunity for an individual to join the organisation to serve an apprenticeship as a Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician.

Duties will include:

  • You will learn how to comply with industry health, safety and environmental working practices and regulations
  • Prepare work areas to undertake work related activities and reinstate those areas after the completion of the work related activities
  • Learn how to read, understand and interpret information and work in compliance with technical specifications and supporting documentation
  • Become competent undertaking preventative maintenance activities in line with company schedules and procedures
  • Learn how to inspect and maintain plant and equipment to meet operational requirements
  • Become competent assessing and testing the performance and condition of plant and equipment
  • Learn how to locate, and rectify faults on plant and equipment
  • Communicate with and provide information to stakeholders in line with personal role and responsibilities
  • Communicate, handover and confirm that the appropriate engineering process has been completed to specification

Skills required:

  • Excellent communications skills are required as this job entails daily contact with all personnel and the Crane and F.D managers
  • This will include written communication skills enabling you to complete reports.
  • You must be able to explain problems and how they were dealt with clearly and concisely     
  • Awareness of health and safety considerations.

Personal qualities:

  • Once trained you will be able to work effectively when supervised, with the flexibility to work on your own initiative when required
  • Good eyesight and hand to eye coordination
  • Capable of working in confined spaces with unusual body postures
  • You must be able to work flexibly in respect of requirements of the post
  • Commit to further training and personal development
  • You will demonstrate an interest in Huhtamaki and the wider manufacturing industry
  • Willing to work flexible hours including undertaking shift work in the apprenticeship

Qualifications required:

  • Minimum of 3 GCSEs or equivalent (inc Math’s, English, Science) at Grade C
  • BTEC or relevant Engineering qualification is desirable
  • A Level qualifications or equivalents in relevant subject including math’s or science will be looked upon favourably
