You will learn how to dismantle and maintain press tools, diagnose faults and conduct remedial work. You will also rebuild assemblies using fitting & finishing techniques. You will also learn all the skills involved in toolmaking i.e. setting and operating machinery to manufacture components to tight tolerances and measuring parts to ensure accuracy

Duties will include:

  • You learn how to work safely following workshop and production area safety systems at all times
  • With experience you will learn how to identify suitable machining strategies for a range press tool components manufacturing components to tight tolerances
  • Learn how to build new press and cold forming tools for a range of industrial applications
  • You be performing regular preventative maintenance activities on press tools, assembly jigs and special purpose machines. This will involve stripping tools to component level conducting visual inspections identifying damage and faults and conducting remedial work as required
  • You will be working with highly skilled engineers conducting breakdown maintenance on tools mounted in power presses and cold heading machines.
  • Once your have sufficient experience you will be undertaking modification of the mould tools on site
  • The role will also include hand finishing parts and assembling tools for manufacturing use
  • You will learn how to identify root causes of problems, completing repairs and ordering replacement parts as required
  • You will learn how to use a range of tool room techniques including milling, turning, grinding, EDM wire erosion and Di Sparking.
  • You will complete the required necessary documentation at the end of your activity, prior to handing back to the production operatives.

Skills required:

  • You will have a good level of dexterity and hand skills
  • Being able to demonstrate an interest in manufacturing mechanical components is highly desirable
  • You will have good hand to eye co-ordination
  • Your logical approach to problem solving will enable you to perform to make a good contribution to all aspects of the job
  • You need to be able to learn through instruction and experience

  • Your motivation and drive are the assets that will be best appreciated. 
  • You will need good communication skills as you will develop into a role where the ability to communicate on a technical level with peers and management is a crucial skill
  • You will need to be open minded and willing to develop your knowledge and skills to support your future development

Qualifications required:

  • 3 GCSE's at grade C/4 or above (or equivalents) to include Math’s and English
  • Additionally, a science or engineering qualification is highly desirable
  • Any engineering experience or qualifications will be looked upon favourably
