This is an opportunity to learn all aspects of the CNC machining process. This will include identifying work holding methods, programming, setting and operating. You will inspect components to engineering drawings ensuring they meet quality requirements

Your apprenticeship training programme will start with a tour of the different business areas at our Portsmouth facility. This will provide you with you with the opportunity to identify your preferred occupational area within the mechanical manufacturing area. We provide design, manufacturing and precision engineering services to a variety of sectors worldwide. Investment and innovation has seen us double our turnover in the last seven years allowing us to have an extensive CNC machining and welding/fabrication facility extending over almost 10,000 square meters on our purpose-built site

Duties will include:

  • Learn how to check materials to ensure that sufficient  raw materials are available and correct using drawings and technical specifications
  • Follow engineering drawings and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Use the latest techniques, including applying innovative work holding arrangements utilising specialist tooling
  • Learn a range of machining strategies to increase accuracy and productivity
  • Learn how to plan how to complete turning operations, programming (or loading) data into CNC Lathes utilise driven tooling to reduce machining times
  • Learn how to plan how to complete milling operations, programming (or loading) data into CNC Mills using fixtures and vices
  • Learn to adjust a range of machining parameters to maximise machining outcomes
  • Produce products with a high degree of accuracy and finish, ensuring Portsmouth Aviation’s quality standards are achieved. 
  • You will also learn how to use conventional mechanical measuring equipment including Vernier’s, Micrometers and slips
  • You will be learning how to use specialist inspection and test equipment

Skills required:

  • You will have a good level of dexterity and hand skills
  • Demonstrate an interest in manufacturing mechanical components is highly desirable
  • You will have good hand to eye co-ordination
  • Your logical approach to problem solving will enable you to perform to make a good contribution to all aspects of the job
  • You need to be able to learn through instruction and experience

Personal qualities:

  • Your motivation and drive are the assets that will be best appreciated. 
  • You will need good communication skills as you will develop into a role where the ability to communicate on a technical level with peers and management is a crucial skill
  • You will need to be open minded and willing to develop your knowledge and skills to support your future development

Qualifications required:

  • 3 GCSE's at grade C or above (or equivalents) to include Maths and English are essential
  • Additionally a science or engineering qualification is highly desirable
  • Any engineering experience or qualifications will be looked upon favourably
