Duties will include:

  • The successful candidate will be working with a small team of engineers on a wide range of business activities relating to printed circuit manufacture and similar industries
  • You will be based at Viking’s premises in Petersfield, Hampshire and may be required to travel to service customers and visit suppliers in the UK, across Europe and the rest of the world
  • You will be involved in a wide range of activities including installation and support of a variety of customer machinery including manual machining, chemical processing and electronic test equipment.
  • There will be opportunities to be involved in all aspects of the business which can include: Helping customers to specify equipment for purchase, negotiation with suppliers, machine installation, machine servicing, customer support, workshop activities and machine design and assembly. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and interested in developing a very wide range of electro-mechanical skills

Other information:

  • The company are based in Petersfield, the successful candidate would need to be prepared to travel by car or train, sometimes for long distances to customer premises
  • Apprentices may be required to work away from home at one of Viking’s customers and would therefore need to stay overnight in hotels
  • Due to the nature of the business, a driving licence and passport will be required to fulfil this position

During the foundation phase (18 months day release) you will complete a Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (Foundation Competence) at the PETA Ltd Engineering Training Centre in Havant (5 minute walk from Havant Railway Station), consisting of the following units:

  • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
  • Working efficiently and effectively in an engineering environment
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Conducting business improvement activities
  • Maintaining mechanical devices and equipment
  • Maintaining electrical equipment/systems
  • Assembling and testing electronic circuits
  • General machining, fitting and assembly applications
  • General welding applications
  • Producing CAD models (drawings) using a CAD system

On completion of the foundation phase you will progress to the development phase to complete a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing (Development Knowledge), requiring two years of day release, and a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence), completed within the workplace

Within the programme you will also need to achieve English and maths functional skills at level 2, however if you have already achieved GCSE’s in these subjects at grade C (4) or above then the functional skills are not required.

Skills required:

  • You will be organised and work in a tidy, professional manner
  • Have an excellent attention to detail
  • You will possess good interpersonal and written writing skills
  • Have good numerical, logical, organisational and analytical skills
  • You will be computer literate
  • Experience of working directly with customers would be a great asset

Personal qualities:

  • A genuine interest in testing and servicing with aspirations to become a field engineer.
  • A self-starter and good team worker
  • Flexible with a “can do” attitude
  • Willing to undertake a business travel to work at other sites and customer premises
  • Willing to work flexibly

Qualifications required:

  • 6 GCSEs (A* - C), including Maths, English and a Science
  • A level 3 Btec in Engineering will be looked upon favourably
