Are you interested in the printing press industry? An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Production Support Administrator to work within the Planning/CtP department at Portsmouth Web, Hilsea. Duties will include:

Job Purpose

  • Input all publications according to Schedule into Press management systems to include web leads, colour positions and product specifications to drive auto plan system to enable smooth production of plates and ensure timely delivery to Press.
  • Undertake plate running duties, in order to deliver and accurately fit plates on press according to job impositions to optimise job make readies and press turn round.

Organisational Relationships

  • Undertake plate running duties, in order to deliver and accurately fit plates on press according to job impositions to optimise job make readies and press turn round.

Areas of Accountability:

  • Accountable for the provision of CTP Plates to ensure continuity in the operation of Portsmouth Web.
  • Provide First Line Support for file transmission and all CTP systems including, all plate making operations and systems.
  • Deliver plates to press and mount where required based on impositions

Primary Roles

  • Input of all publications and press jobs required for production.
  • Monitor file transmission for Johnston Press Print Centers, external customers and outsourced printing.
  • Plan and manage conflicting priorities to ensure continuity of production throughout the CTP process during shift.
  • Ensure a high emphasis is placed upon customer care for the internal and external customers.
  • To review basic quality and accuracy of all products
  • Prioritise and attend breakdowns to meet work time constraints, reporting issues to Agfa and local engineering teams for resolution.
  • Undertake preventative maintenance tasks as dictated by management and operational needs.
  • Contribute positively to the team effort to ensure maximum efficiency and continuity of work.
  • Record daily figures for all key metrics within own area to include Plate usage, stock levels and filetimes.
  • All work to be conducted in a manner that ensures a safe working environment at all times in accordance with current health and safety regulations.
  • Organise and manage plates output and delivery of plates to Press in order to optimize performance.
  • Ensure Machines are Loaded with plates to cover production
  • Manage Plate Stocks and prepare pallets for product
  • Undertake any other reasonable tasks as required.

Other information:

  • Due to the nature of the printing industry, this role involves shift work which means you will be working unsociable hours on a two week rota. 
    • Week 1&2: Sun 6am-3pm, Mon, 6am-3pm, Tues 3pm-12am and Wed 3pm-12am
    • Week 3&4: Tue 3pm-12am, Wed 3pm-12am, Thur 6am-3pm, Fri 6am-3pm
  • Full Training on the job training will be provided – for the suitable candidate
  • This position requires you to work bank holidays and you may need to work Christmas day / night for Boxing Day publications
  • During the first 15 months you will complete the Business Administration Apprenticeship Standard (Level 3)

Skills required:

  • Understanding of newspaper production and terminology would be an advantage
  • Strong computer and communication skills
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • High attention to detail

Qualifications required:

  • GCSE  or equivalent IT qualification grade C(4) or above is preferred but not essential

  • Salary to increase to £18,000 pa upon successful completion of the apprenticeship programme and offer of a full time permanent position
