Simon Elliott

Learning and Development Coach

"Being open to new concept and ideas coupled with a willingness to explore outside the normal boundaries are skills that help me tackle daily work life."

What led you to work for PETA?

Engineering is a lifestyle and a mindset, hence why the grandchildren know me as ‘Grandad spanner’! In the past I was an assistant scout leader until my children outgrew the movement. It was my way of giving back to the organisation after years of withdraw. This concept of giving back has been instrumental to me now working for PETA. Its time to offer my experiences to help and assist learners through their journey with PETA.

What is your role at PETA and what drives you to do what you do?

My role at PETA is a learning and development coach within the engineering department. I am passionate about learning and strongly believe everyone can thrive to their full potential once you have connected with them, gained trust and helped with unlocking and overcoming any inner barriers and obstacles. When you see ‘the penny drop’ in someone’s eyes is very rewarding.

What knowledge/experience do you draw upon for your role?

To date, I have a total of 42 years ‘hands on’ experience with a mix of both shop floor and supervisory managerial roles. Thirteen years in the Royal Navy with my experiences as a Marine Engineering Artificer was a fantastic springboard to take forwards into civilian life. This has been followed with periods of employment ranging from field service engineering, workshop engineering and technical services managerial positions within various companies thus bringing a wider range of skills and attributes to PETA.
Self determination and inner belief realised and consolidated with my more recent Open University History degree.

How do you approach your role on a day-to-day basis? What skills are required?

I embrace the mantra ‘every day is school day’. Being open to new concept and ideas coupled with a willingness to explore outside the normal boundaries are skills that help me tackle daily work life.

What are you passionate about outside of work?

Spending time with friends and family as much as possible which is balanced with a love of cycling, history and walks with grandchildren and dogs. I constantly motivate myself with the great Pink Floyd lyrics “all you touch and all you see, is all your life will ever be”. A powerful reminder to embrace life.

What are your personal values, and what is important to you?

Trust, loyalty and honesty rate very highly to my personal values. Good timekeeping and being prepared to listen to others without judgement also rate highly to me.
