As a Software Developer/Engineer Level 4 apprentice, you will join a team of professionals whose role is to design, develop and test software within an agreed design envelope to enhance the functionality of our business applications.

NATS, formerly National Air Traffic Services, is the main Air Navigation Service Provider in the United Kingdom. It inherited the traditions of UK air traffic control, which was the world's first air traffic control regime. It provides en-route air traffic control services to flights within the UK Flight Information Regions and the Shanwick Oceanic Control Area, and provides air traffic control services to fourteen UK.

Duties will include:

NATS are committed to growing their business organically and through the upskill and supported progression for new staff. This is a new position and You must have a minimum 5 C-A GCSE and completed a Level 3 Apprenticeship in ‘Software Developer Technician’ or any other relevant qualification.

This role allows the successful applicant to qualify as a Software/Adaptation Developer at Level 4.

NATS are looking for an individual who will be able to fulfil the position of Apprentice Software Developer by the end of the Apprenticeship.

  • Develop and implement new software components.
  • Maintain and improve the performance of existing software.
  • Clearly and regularly communicate with management and technical support colleagues.
  • Design and update databases.
  • Test and maintain software products to ensure strong functionality and optimization.
  • Recommend improvements to existing software components as necessary
  • Design – to be capable of designing simple data models and software designs to ensure customer needs are met in a safe but efficient manner.
  • Effectively communicate understanding of the program, following best practices and standards.
  • Development Lifecycle – to have the ability to operate at all stages of the software development lifecycle.
  • C# Logic - to be capable of writing good quality code (logic) with sound syntax in C#.
  • User Interface – to be capable developing develop effective interfaces for channels.
  • Data – to be able to link code to databases and datasets effectively.
  • Test – to be able to test code and analyse results to correct errors.
  • Developing the integrity of business applications, analysis, project planning, development, testing and implementation of software solutions.

Skills required:

  • Experience of developing software. This could be through education or general personal interest.
  • A high interest in current and future technologies.
  • The ideal candidate will be already experimenting with Python/Perl/PHP/C++/T-SQL technologies.
  • Previous experience either through education or general interest of computer user interface design/graphical design skills or web design is desirable.
  • You will be technically minded, have a passion for learning technology.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Capable of working without constant supervision combined with understanding when to ask for help.
  • Good written communication.
  • Excellent organisational and detail analysis skills.
  • Motivated, enthusiastic and reliable.

Qualifications required:

  • 5 GCSE Grades C-A (4-9) or equivalent
