Duties will include:

To be successful in this 21-month apprenticeship you will need to be committed to achieving your apprenticeship qualification and take ownership for your own learning and development. You will be driven to provide a high standard of care to all of our customers through various channels. You will be fully supported in this role and we will help you to develop a wide range of essential business skills.

  • You will be working in our IT Desktop Team that provides a desktop support function to all IT users across the Council’s various sites, helping them to resolve problems and trouble-shoot using technology.
  • You will work alongside an experienced IT Desktop professional to support the work of the team in responding quickly and effectively to resolve IT issues and providing advice and assistance to internal customers.
  • Ensure accurate, professional and timely case management business support is provided to internal customers.
  • Respond to cases via chat, email or phone in an efficient and effective manner and in line with agreed timescales or service level agreements
  • Ensure policies, procedures and workflows for dealing with support requests are adhered to.
  • Assist in ensuring the provision of fit-for-purpose support service systems and processes.
  • Develop an understanding of the principles of the role and team you are working in.
  • Keep information systems and records up to date and accurate.
  • Ensure confidentiality is maintained and the General Data Protection Regulations are followed at all times.
  • To be aware of and comply with all council polices, including Dignity at Work, Health & Safety, Code of Conduct and the Behaviour Framework.
  • Liaising with other departments as required building good working relationships.
  • You will be supported with your personal development and receive on-the-job training in addition to the vocational training.

Other information:

  • The ability to absorb information quickly and analyse problems in a logical and effective way will be a distinct advantage, as would a good understanding of how software and operating systems work.
  • We work with a training provider based in Portsmouth to deliver this Level 3 IT Infrastructure Technician apprenticeship and the successful candidate will need to be able to attend their training facilities on a regular basis as part of the apprenticeship.
  • You will attend PETA’s training centre regularly for taught lessons whilst also receiving on the job training through shadowing and practical working. There will also be the opportunity for in-house and external training as offered throughout the council.

Skills required:

  • Strong IT skills and in particular a knowledge and understanding of existing IT and emerging technologies.
  • The ability to pick up new systems quickly.
  • The ability to analyse information, be detailed and accurate in your work.
  • Good communication skills, particularly with the ability to listen and to question and clearly explain solutions.
  • Ability to think logically and learn quickly.
  • Able to interact confidently with a wide range of people and work effectively as part of a small team.
  • A good understanding or how software and operating systems work.
  • Strong desire and interest to develop career in area of apprenticeship and to continued personal and professional development.

Qualifications required:

  • 5 GCSE’s or equivalent at grade A*-C (Grade 9 to 4) including English and Maths.


  • 20 days annual leave plus 8 days Bank holiday allowance

Future Prospects:

  • If a vacancy is available at the end of the apprentice’s fixed term contract, they will be able to apply for this.
