Ryan Thackaberry

Business Development Manager

"There are some ambitious plans over the next five years to grow the charity both in size and coverage, and I'm excited to be involved in shaping how those goals are delivered."

What led you to work for PETA?

I have over 15 years in sales and new business strategy, working on hundreds of projects for companies such as Deloitte, HSBC, Mercedes, and Eversheds, I also ran an international training company under the Erasmus+ scheme for three years after spending a year facilitating non-formal education projects in Azerbaijan.

I came to PETA to escape the typical “salesey” environment and find a place where I could use both my skills in training and sales to help support the team with impactful strategies and innovative ideas.

What is your role at PETA and what drives you to do what you do?

My role is to champion the new business generation for PETA, there are some ambitious plans over the next five years to grow the charity both in size and coverage, and I'm excited to be involved in shaping how those goals are delivered.

Working with a close team that supports each other with collective knowledge and past experiences is a real driver for me, everything we are looking to achieve is backed by a really strong sense of “group effort”.

What knowledge and experience do you draw upon for your role?

Years of delivering new business projects for companies across every industry gives me a strong insight into the motivators of both company leaders and their management teams, a having a “jack of all trades” collection of knowledge means that we can identify areas where we can best help industries with the common gaps in their training and better shape our outbound business generation.

How do you approach your role on a day-to-day basis? What skills are required?

A thick skin and a realistic approach to our outreach, it’s best practice to plan out everything you do both day to day and with wider strategies, you’re going to get a lot of rejections with any form of outreach, and you have to be able to take it on the chin and persevere!

What are you passionate about outside of work?

I’m the biggest nerd, I play a range of card/board/computer games and can pretty much answer any question about Star Wars.

I also love to travel and have been to some pretty obscure places you would never think of visiting; I often visit past delegates from my training courses and get to see a lot of countries from a local's point of view rather than just a tourist.

What are your personal values, and what is important to you?

I’d rather be building a solution that works for everybody involved in a company rather than just “selling a course”. PETA have such a vast offering and I'm a natural problem solver, so it’s a perfect match!

Rapport is important to me, leaving clients with a sense that I’ve got their goals in mind rather than just mine is the kind of impression I want to leave with everyone I speak to.
