Emma Brennan

Health and Safety Training Manager

"Strangely enough, I didn’t grow up thinking that I would like a career in Health and Safety."

What led you to work for PETA?

Strangely enough, I didn’t grow up thinking that I would like a career in Health and Safety (I know!) however, I always thrived on being organised and love creating a spreadsheet or agenda at any given opportunity.  13 years ago, I was informed that the organisation that I was working for was relocating out of the area and this led me to apply for an Administration role at PETA.

Over the years I have gained a wider understanding of the business as a whole and developed my health and safety knowledge, unearthing a passion for keeping people safe and compliant which assisted me when progressing to the Manager role.

What is your role at PETA and what drives you to do what you do?

My role is to understand our customers business and provide effective solutions to educate and support them in ensuring legislative compliance. We know now, more than ever, that nothing is more important than people’s safety.

Knowing that the work I do contributes to people going home at the end of their workday, safely to their families and friends, gives me the drive and determination to keep doing what I do.

What knowledge/experience do you draw upon for your role?

In 2013, I achieved a Distinction for the NEBOSH National General Certificate qualification (studied with PETA).  I draw upon the knowledge that I gained through this study, along with my organisational skills, to be effective within my role as a Manager.

How do you approach your role on a day-to-day basis? What skills are required?

In Health and Safety compliance training, it is important to know the various options available to our customers.  It is not always a one size fits all scenario, and our customers are all facing different challenges, which are important to them.  I, therefore, need to be able to think on my feet, with an open mind to then come up with a solution that meets the need but is also flexible.

What are you passionate about outside of work?

Outside of work I am married with two young children who keep me very busy.  In addition to this, I run and coach my own Baton Twirling team.

What are your personal values, and what is important to you?

It is very important to me that my colleagues and customers know that I will always do my absolute best, with honesty and integrity.
