Ryan Brooks

Engineering Instructor

I look to be the instructor that each learner will remember later on in life. This drives me forward to provide the best training I possibly can.

What lead you to work for PETA?

In school I enjoyed sports, History and CDT. After school, I became a PETA apprentice in 1998 and qualified as an Electro-Mechanical Maintenance Engineer, following on from my father and grandfather both of whom became engineers.

What is your role at PETA and what drives you to do what you do?

I am now an Instructor for PETA in the Engineering training centre, so I have come full circle. I made this career change because of a desire to “give something back” to a trade/industry that has supported and nurtured me throughout my working life.

What knowledge/experience do you draw upon for your role?

I have 20+ years’ experience as a Maintenance Engineer working in High yield production, Defence and Wastewater sectors of industry. This experience is proving invaluable when it comes to giving my training credibility with contemporary, real world experiences to discuss with my learners.

How do you approach your role on a day-to-day basis? What skills are required?

I look to be the instructor that each learner will remember later on in life. This drives me forward to provide the best training I possibly can.

I am passionate about engineering, particularly mechanical engineering, and I’ll try to inspire that same passion in my learners.

What are you passionate about outside of work?

I love my family dearly and feeling their pride in me motivates me to achieve greater and greater things both at home and in work.

I am an avid football fan, supporting Portsmouth Football Club since I was 5 years old. This has taught me that even when things appear to be disastrous, hard work and good humour will see me through anything.

What are your personal values, and what is important to you?

What matters to me is that everyone gets treated fairly and has an equal opportunity to achieve what they want to achieve, free from discrimination and prejudice of every kind.
