Article summary: Digital skills can be applied to many aspects of your business and if you do not have adequate provision in these areas, you could find yourselves slipping behind your competitors and others in your industry.
The damage that COVID has done to our economy has been substantial and anything that we can do to contribute to its recovery is extremely worthwhile.
A major new study by Virgin Media Business and the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) has reported that investment in digital technology could increase the UK’s GDP by £232bn (6.9%) by 2040. The research suggests that increased digital ways of working could support the UK’s economic recovery from COVID-19, with sustained digital investment potentially boosting the economy by £127bn (4.4%) by the end of the decade.
Although many businesses have already made drastic changes to their business models as a result of COVID, this still presents a major digital opportunity for organisations across the economy. The report also identifies a link to increased employee productivity. The research suggests an almost 12% productivity growth assumption for employees who are able to take full advantage of COVID-accelerated digital transformation.
Peter Kelly, Managing Director of Virgin Media Business, said: “Moves to accelerate digital adoption are driving extraordinary outcomes across private and public sector organisations, helping them to revolutionise how they work, deliver for customers, and provide vital services for our communities. Through investing in our digital future we will support new growth, drive the UK economy forward and help the country to rebound stronger.”
Cristian Niculescu-Marcu CFA, Director of Economic Analysis at Cebr, added: “Within this research we have examined the potential economic impact of a wave of digital transformation, driven by the rollout of new ways of working and connecting. This could create an economic high road over the coming decades, helping the UK economy to grow while also having the flexibility to deal with future challenges.”
How we can help
At PETA, we offer apprenticeship programmes across a range of disciplines including software development, network engineering and digital marketing. We’ll work with you to identify the digital apprenticeship that would be of most benefit to your organisation to ensure that upon completion of the programme, your newly-qualified employee will have a significant positive impact on your business.
Our ICT trainers are experts in their fields, ready to guide your new apprentice through their training, preparing them for the world of work whilst also providing you with any advice that’s needed along the way. We’ll deliver training at our Portsmouth-based centre or online as appropriate, as well workplace observations (in line with COVID guidelines).
We can manage the apprentice recruitment process for you from start to finish. We’ll advertise the position on your behalf, create a shortlist of the best applicants and assist with the interviews to ensure you find the ideal candidate for the role and your organisation. Our knowledgeable apprenticeship team can even help you understand and manage your apprenticeship funding to ensure you maximise your investment.
The Apprenticeship Levy was introduced in 2017 to create national funding for apprenticeships and to enable businesses of all sizes to implement their own apprenticeship programmes. Thanks to the Levy - and Co-funded models for smaller businesses - 95% to 100% of apprentice training costs will be government-funded, meaning that training a new member of staff or upskilling an existing one could cost you nothing, or very little, which is a huge incentive.
