SUMO workshop a great success!

Article summary: We recently welcomed Sunday Times best-selling author Paul McGee back to our PETA HQ to host a one-day workshop entitled ‘Learn to Shut Up and Move On’.

The event was a great success, with 42 delegates attending on the day. Paul, who is also known internationally as The SUMO Guy, shared his life experience and skills using the ‘Shut Up and Move On’ techniques detailed in his best selling book SUMO: the Straight-Talking Guide to Succeeding in Life.

Paul attended a PETA open day in 2017 as a guest speaker and was extremely well-received. We’ve been waiting for the right opportunity for a return visit and this day-long, SUMO-focused workshop provided that opportunity.

PETA’s Management and Business Training Manager, Phil Mirner introduced Paul, giving the delegates an overview of his background. Paul launched into the session, quickly energising the group. He took a light hearted approach and got them working together, discussing different things.

He ran through the SUMO concept, talking to the attendees about various different models such as Green Zone Thinking and how to reposition your mindset. Over the course of the day, Paul broke his philosophies down, illustrating a number of key messages.

The workshop was extremely interactive with the delegates working together throughout. The course was useful for personal aspects as well as work-related matters as it’s about how you approach and handle situations, which can be applied to every aspect of your life. The content covered how to not overreact to things and looked at how you think about things in order to promote positivity.

Feedback on the course was exceptional, with 95% of attendees saying they’d recommend PETA to others, 94% saying they’d recommend this workshop to others and 94% saying the course met their objectives.

When asked: What made this course a great experience for you? Here’s what the delegates said:

“Very engaging with useful content that can be used practically straight away.”

“Best course I have been on in many years. Truly inspiring and thought-provoking.”

“Engaging, meaningful, relatable and well presented. The interaction was great!”

“Fantastic speaker, hugely inspiring and accessible. Lots of good techniques to take away.”

“A great mix of interaction, props and talking. Paul was a great presenter.”

The comments on Paul’s style, content and delivery were all extremely positive and it’s safe to say that everyone who attended enjoyed the course. Paul’s aim was to assist delegates in breaking down their own mental barriers, providing them with tactics to adapt and thrive in the workplace as well as in life. His patented brand of practical ‘no bull’ business coaching has been adopted by senior executives at Adidas, Specsavers and Harrods among others.

Phil said: “I enjoyed Paul’s visit in 2017 so bringing him back five years later to do the workshop was great! There were a few familiar faces in the room who had returned to see Paul again as well as many new ones. The aim was to equip the attendees with tools and techniques that would be useful in their everyday lives, whilst also having some fun at the same time. It was great and we’re now exploring a number of different options for future workshops in a similar vein.”
