Meet the team: Paul Gamble, Health & Safety Trainer/Adviser

“I never envisaged a career in health and safety, but after studying the NEBOSH courses with PETA I knew I wanted to help others achieve the same.”

What led you to work for PETA?

I attended PETA Training to undertake the suite of NEBOSH certificates - General, Environmental Management and Fire Safety - in my previous role and I really enjoyed my time as a delegate. I appreciated the training, the various teaching styles I witnessed and the facilities were excellent.

I was looking for a change and the idea of working for PETA excited me and spurred me on to apply for a role here. My previous role was as a Health & Safety Manager for a mechanical and electrical company so I had the background experience and knowledge that I needed to be able to do this role well. Before joining PETA in December 2021, I completed an online teaching qualification, which has been hugely beneficial. I had a month to complete the course, which consisted of theory work, three assignments and a micro-teaching session, which I delivered at PETA to my colleagues.

In addition to my extensive health and safety knowledge, I also have experience of carrying out staff health and safety inductions, which stood me in good stead for this role. I also did performing arts at college so I’m more than happy to stand at the front of a training room with all eyes on me!

When I joined my previous employer I completed the IOSH Managing Safely course and shortly after went on to undertake the suite of NEBOSH certificates. I never envisaged a career in health and safety, but after studying the NEBOSH courses with PETA I knew I wanted to help others achieve the same. It really sparked my interest and drove me to the role I’m in now as I wanted to look at health and safety from the other perspective.

What is your role at PETA and what drives you to do what you do?

As a Health & Safety Trainer/Adviser I will be leading various health and safety courses, everything from manual handling to NEBOSH General and NEBOSH Environmental Management. I also hope to get into mental health first aid training and the drive behind that desire is that because I’ve been a Health & Safety Manager, I’ve seen the struggles employees face and I want to help bring the next generation of health and safety professionals through successfully. I truly believe it will be extremely rewarding helping others prepare for a career in health and safety, which is so valuable to organisations.

What knowledge/experience do you draw upon for your role?

I draw upon a combination of my health and safety experience and knowledge as well as the skills I learned doing inductions and directing groups. The training I completed as a delegate at PETA demonstrated several different teaching styles to me and I plan to incorporate the various elements that I liked the most to create my own style.

What are you passionate about outside of work?

I enjoy cycling and watching football - I used to enjoy playing too until my knees gave up! I also love spending quality time with my family, watching movies and socialising with friends.

What are your personal values and what is important to you?

I think it’s important to treat everyone fairly and with respect and to ensure that everyone has the same opportunities. I treat people as I would wish to be treated myself and I don’t think you can go far wrong with that.
