Why choose an apprenticeship?

Earning whilst learning piqued Michael’s interest...

Summary: Michael didn’t think university would suit him as he prefers to learn in a more hands-on way. When he discovered that an apprenticeship would allow him to do this, whilst also earning a wage, he was keen to get started.

What made you choose an apprenticeship?

After I finished college I worked full time. I wanted to do further training in the field of IT but didn’t want to go to university as I’ve always found that I learnt better by doing. The main appeal of an apprenticeship to me was learning on the job. Earning while learning was also attractive too!

What’s the best part of your job and being an apprentice?

I work as part of a small IT team, which allows me to experience the full range of roles that are available in this field. My favourite thing about being an apprentice is seeing your skills and qualifications grow whilst successfully carrying out a role within a company at the same time, it's very rewarding.

Would you recommend apprenticeships and if so why?

I would definitely recommend doing an apprenticeship as they offer an alternative style of learning. It suited my needs more than going to university and I believe that it would suit many others too.
