Summary: Joey, a former pupil at Warblington School from Cosham, discusses his training as an engineering apprentice.
What made you choose an apprenticeship?
When I left school I had an interest in engineering but I didn't want to get into debt. An apprenticeship really appealed because I knew I would be paid whilst gaining a qualification. I started out in mechanical engineering and that developed into an interest in Steam and now I am a qualified Steam Engineer.
What’s the best part of your job and being an apprentice?
I love that by stripping an engine down and cleaning the parts I can save my employer - literally - thousands of pounds. I love being able to use my skills to make a big difference to a business.
My favourite thing about being an apprentice is getting your qualifications whilst earning a wage and feeling you make a real difference.
Would you recommend apprenticeships and if so why?
Yes earning and learning at the same time - where can you go wrong with that! After the first few months, you realise how much you have learned and you gain so much confidence, so much more so than at school.
Ultimately I'd like to go to university to complete an engineering degree, hopefully as part of my job on an advanced apprenticeship.
