Sophie Murray

Marketing Officer

"I really believe in PETA’s goals and aspirations, so wanting to get our message out there just comes naturally."

What led you to work for PETA?

I graduated from university in 2021 with a first-class degree in Spanish and English Language, then worked as a business reporter at my local newspaper for 9 months. After some amazing experiences in my previous role, I wanted to explore a different career path as I’ve never known exactly what job I wanted to do. Due to the overlaps with journalism, I expressed an interest in marketing and was fortunate to be given the opportunity to work as marketing officer here at PETA.

What is your role at PETA and what drives you to do what you do?

I work as marketing officer, so am involved in all aspects of marketing across the company. This could be through social media posts, emails, website development, event planning, creating posters and planning communications campaigns, just anything that helps to spread the word about what we do! I really believe in PETA’s goals and aspirations, so wanting to get our message out there just comes naturally.

What knowledge or experience do you draw upon for your role?

I’ve always been interested in language and communication, whether through learning foreign languages or writing news stories when I worked as a journalist, so I love opportunities to be creative in my role. My degree gave me the chance to explore communication across different cultures, as well as live abroad for 6 months, which I like to think has opened my mind to appreciating different ways of life. At university I also had the chance to lead the social media team for my department’s Instagram page, which directly links to the work that I do here. As a journalist, the purpose of my role was to share people’s stories in engaging ways, so I am able to bring those same skills to this role.

How do you approach your role on a day-to-day basis? What skills are required?

On a day-to-day basis my role can include a range of different activities, such as writing email promotions and organising email data, creating social media content, designing templates and graphics, having planning meetings about events such as our Apprentice of the Year Awards, making updates to the website and always planning ahead! In order to stay on top of everything, I need to stay organised, flexible, and able to adapt to any unexpected jobs that might crop up in between.

What are you passionate about outside of work?

Outside of work, I love to travel so I’m always planning my next trip. At the end of 2022 I achieved a travel milestone of visiting 24 countries before my 24th birthday! My 24th country was the Vatican City, and I hope to expand on my list next year and in years to come. I also love languages, and as well as keeping up my Spanish since finishing university, I’ve also started learning Cantonese which has been a challenging but really rewarding experience so far.

What are your personal values, and what is important to you?

Authenticity, open-mindedness and kindness are probably the most important values to me. I’m always wanting to learn new things so being open to different perspectives and experiences is something I try and do every day.
