Why apprenticeships appeal to me
Connor McGuffin from Waterlooville went to Crookhorn College before becoming a PETA Apprentice in 2015 at Carrera UK in Portsmouth.
What made you choose an apprenticeship?
The apprenticeships way of learning on-the-job was far more appealing to me because it is learning in a real job instead of learning in a classroom with a fake customer scenario. With Apprenticeships, you are surrounded by professionals who can teach you the tricks of the trade and guide you to the correct solution. You wouldn't get all the same learning opportunities at college.
What is your favourite thing about being an apprentice?
Being surrounded by professionals who have helped me every step of the way. This includes my colleagues and the PETA Trainers, especially Andy.
What’s the best bit of the job/ what do you feel proud of and why?
Getting tasked within the first few months to add a new product which we could provide to our customers, it was a Point Of Sale or POS system.
Would you recommend apprenticeships and if so why?
Yes. It brings another way of learning and allows school leavers and college leavers a chance to gain experience in the job and learning at the same time. There are so many different types of apprenticeships available that I am sure there is one out there for everyone. With apprenticeships it allows each individual to gain experience and expand their knowledge and qualify with professionals around them.
What is your greatest achievement?
Finishing my intermediate and advanced apprenticeships and winning the PETA ITC Apprentice of the year award in 2018.
