Assistant Accountant Level 3


Carrying out routine financial activities and support for businesses and organisations

Who is it for?

An Assistant Accountant provides support to internal and external customers and will work predominately either as an assistant accountant within practise or alternatively within the finance function of an organisation. Part of their role will involve assisting in the day-to-day financial activities such as:

  • Data entry to month end management accounts and/or year-end financial statements
  • Regulatory financial requirements such as the completion of VAT returns
  • Assisting in the preparation of tax computations

Whilst undertaking this apprenticeship you will gain a wealth of knowledge and skills undertaking a key role within your company. In addition you will achieve the following qualifications:

  • AAT Level 3  Diploma


Course Overview

Core Competencies of the Apprenticeship:

Throughout the apprenticeship programme the learner will develop key abilities across the three competency areas of the standards, knowledge, skills and behaviours. Some of the key focus will be on, but not limited to:

  • Financial Accounting and Reporting
  • Understands their organisations business strategy including customer and supplier needs
  • Consistently delivers high quality, ‘right first time’ financial and performance data
  • Understands how to recognise and use different accounting approaches and can gather, analyse and report
  • information about income and expenditure to support decision-making, planning and control
  • Understands the systems and process of the organisation, within the responsibility of the position such as Sales, Purchase and Payroll
  • Understands how to account for the purchase and disposal of non-current assets


End Point Assessment Activities:

  • Structured interview (supported by the summary of portfolio evidence)

During your apprenticeship you will receive:

  • An induction to the programme to make you feel welcome and to help you understand how the apprenticeship works
  • Day release training at our Training Centre to help build your knowledge and skills
  • Training in the workplace to help you learn the job role and to become a valued member of the team
  • Regular progress reviews to help with your development and to ensure you remain on track to successfully complete your apprenticeship

The vast majority of your learning will be undertaken whilst you are working. In order to successfully achieve the apprenticeship, 6 hours a week of the teaching, learning and development will be undertaken through off-the-job training which takes place at our PETA Training Centre in Cosham, Portsmouth.
